A recent press release declared that a body of about 50 letters, between Tuma and O’Keeffe, from 1964-1973, will be auctioned at Sotheby’s New York on June 18, 2010, following a five-day preview period beforehand.

An Artist’s Odyssey
Mym Tuma illuminated her relationship with iconic painter Georgia O’Keeffe in a portion of her novel An Artist’s’ Odyssey, when she wrote:

“. . .we had shared similarities . . . we saw beauty on earth, in pebbles, rock formations, or clouds, space, flowers, hills, mountains, bones and shells as more than the realistic objects in nature”

O’Keeffe in New Mexico
During the 1960’s and early 70’s, Tuma visited O’Keeffe several times at her ranch in Abiquiu, New Mexico, where the two artists exchanged ideas on art and life. With over 50 years separating them, O’Keeffe assumed the role of mentor and Tuma the eager student, looking for a kindred spirit who could provide guidance and direction.

Tuma saved the letters all these years. On June 18, Sotheby’s will hold an auction of this complete body of work, starting at 10 a.m. The starting estimate is $20,000-30,000. Also on this day, Sotheby’s will auction the letters of Rene Magritte, the original manuscript of Ayn Rand, and the lyrics of John Lennon.
